What Snohomish County Family Court Records Include

Family court records in Snohomish County span several case types filed with the Superior Court. Dissolution and legal separation cases are governed by RCW Chapter 26.09. Each dissolution file includes the petition, summons, financial declarations, any settlement agreement, the parenting plan (when children are involved), and the Decree of Dissolution or Legal Separation. Child support orders and spousal maintenance terms are part of the final decree.

Custody and parenting plan cases generate their own records. Parenting plan modifications, relocation notices, and support modifications are also filed with the Superior Court and stored by the clerk. Protection orders including domestic violence protection orders, anti-harassment orders, and sexual assault protection orders are family court records as well.

Other case types include adoption petitions under RCW Chapter 26.33, guardianship filings, and paternity actions. All of these create records that are managed and stored by the Snohomish County Clerk. Most records are public except those restricted by court rule or statute.

Washington's mandatory 90-day waiting period applies to all dissolution cases from the date the petition is filed and served. There are no exceptions. This is a state law requirement that applies in Snohomish County and every other county in Washington.

Certified Divorce Records for Snohomish County

If you need a certified copy of a divorce certificate rather than the full court file, the Washington State Department of Health maintains divorce records from 1968 to the present. You can order through doh.wa.gov. The base fee is $25 per copy. No identity verification is required. These one-page certificates confirm that a divorce occurred and list the names, date, and county of the decree. They do not include the full decree or parenting plan details.

For the full court file including the Decree of Dissolution and parenting plan, you must request copies from the Snohomish County Superior Court Clerk. Certified copies from the clerk's office cost $5.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each additional page. Non-certified copies cost less. Plain copies are sufficient for many purposes; certified copies are required for legal proceedings and government agencies.

For pre-1968 records and historical research, the Washington State Digital Archives has older Superior Court case records searchable by record series and keyword.
